Colloquium-From the Division Algorithm to Fractals: Dynamics vis-à-vis Diophantine Approximation

Friday, October 2, 2026 2:00 pm - 3:00 pm

Friday, October 2, from 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM in Rome 204

Our speaker will be Prof. Tushar Das from UW–La Crosse, presenting on the topic:

From the Division Algorithm to Fractals: Dynamics vis-à-vis Diophantine Approximation

Abstract:
Iterating the ancient division algorithm yields continued fractions—a foundational object that links geometry, number theory, analysis, topology, stochastics, and dynamics. In this talk, we will survey a small confluence of results at the fertile interface of geometric measure theory, dynamical systems, and Diophantine approximation. Designed to be accessible to students and faculty alike, this talk requires only curiosity as a prerequisite, and will include a number of open questions and research directions that await exploration by the mathematical community at GWU and beyond.
