Logic-Topology Seminar and University Seminar-Non-standard groups

Thursday, March 26, 2026 4:45 pm - 5:45 pm

Speaker: Alexei Miasnikov (Stevens Institute)
Time: March 26 (Thursday), 4;45-5:45 in the room PHIL 510

Title: Non-standard groups

Abstract: Similar to non-standard arithmetic and non-standard analysis, one can introduce non-standard groups (and rings). This leads to a “non-standard” combinatorial and geometric group theory.
In this talk, I will discuss some interesting examples and unusual applications. In particular, I will describe non-standard versions of free and hyperbolic groups, non-standard polynomial rings,
and free associative algebras.
